  • el Seco: Next up, Mansfield Park
  • Giullieta: Two questions: What ever happened to AZboy, and will he be coming to the reunion?
  • Dubya: So what's after Mansfield Park?
  • el Seco: Next up: Emma. In September.
  • Dubya: Well I just finished Mansfield Park. My favorite by far.
  • Dubya: I'm hoping I get done with Dostoevsky's "The Idiot" by September.
  • Green: I started reading The Idiot about a year ago, but I quit because the translation was so bad.
  • Dubya: Yeah I sort of quit already too. Not sure who the translator is on this one but I wasn't enjoying it one bit.
  • Green: Best Russian translators: Pevear and Volokhonsky. According to me, anyway.
  • janeheiress: Emma is so hard to read! But I'm going to do it. And Pevear and Volokhonsky are fabulous, but I've only read Crime & Punishment.

I'm So 2010

Happy New Year. It is amazing to me how quickly the years go by. Every year seems to flow by even faster than the last.

In the spirit of the new year, I propose we post some resolutions for 2010. I will start.

In 2010, I resolve to:

  1. Read all six major works of Jane Austen, starting with Northanger Abbey today. That's right kids, if you are reading along with me. Pick up your copies of the book and start reading today!
  2. Begin and maintain a running regimen. This will likely be the toughest one for me, but I must get in shape, so despite how much I hate running, I will do it. I have not worked out the specifics yet, but I will soon.
  3. Take an extended trip to a foreign country. Giullieta did it, and I will not be outdone by Giullieta.

Those are great resolutions! So how long does an "extended trip" have to be?

I have two that are no one's business but my own, but one I just made today: to get rid of my Netflix account in the next six months. No matter how I justify watching movies, my time could be much better spent doing other things. Oh, and anyone know where I can find a camel to ride?

In addition to the usual get healthy, get organized, blah, blah blah . . . For 2010 I resolve to complete a well researched and polished outline (and possibly even first draft) for my book.

el Seco, I too am curious as to the length of your extended trip. But regardless of where you go, I highly recommend setting up an account on Couchsurfing.org. I haven't had to pay for a hostel for over a year now, and I've made some amazing friends thanks to that website. Look me up, I'll give you a reference. Also, check out active.com for good training advice.

Janeheiress, I seem to recall camel rides being offered at the last Renaissance Festival I went to. But it does bring to mind one of the things I promised myself to do before I die, which is to ride a camel through Egypt. I say you, me, and el Seco all get together and take a month long adventure trip, Egypt to Jerusalem. I'll meet ya'll in Cairo!

I also resolve to exercise more often.

I resolve to travel to a city I've never been to before, continuing the tradition of the last two years (international travel will have to wait for another year).

I resolve to attend more motorsports events (as long as they're not NASCAR).

I used to hate running, too, el Seco. Then I discovered Bollywood music.

I resolve to maintain the exercise regimen I started in September, and to be a kinder person, because I think I've been really mean and snarky lately, and it's out of character (I hope).

I've been having this internal debate about whether I should go for international travel, or whether I should do the fiscally responsible thing and start saving to buy a house. I'm finding, too, that a lot of people I know are not really serious when they talk about going on trips. They just like the excitement of talking about it, but when it comes down to committing, they lose their enthusiasm. Maybe I'm one of those people, too, I don't know. I hope not.

So many traveling resolutions. I'll say it again, summer rant fever reunion in Prague! C'mon, free room & board with a personal tour guide and crappy translator in the city of a hundred spires! What could be better than that!?

Mine are not as adventurous as all of yours. Maybe that's because I have two kids that are only 13 months apart. That's adventure enough. Here we go:

I resolve to become healthy. I will completely change the way I eat. Less processed crap, more single ingredient foods you could find while foraging.(I think foraging sounds fun) Health is everything. (If a smokin' bod comes of this, so be it!)
I resolve to be kind to others. (Watch for this to be posted for my resolution for the next 10 years or so)
