  • el Seco: Next up, Mansfield Park
  • Giullieta: Two questions: What ever happened to AZboy, and will he be coming to the reunion?
  • Dubya: So what's after Mansfield Park?
  • el Seco: Next up: Emma. In September.
  • Dubya: Well I just finished Mansfield Park. My favorite by far.
  • Dubya: I'm hoping I get done with Dostoevsky's "The Idiot" by September.
  • Green: I started reading The Idiot about a year ago, but I quit because the translation was so bad.
  • Dubya: Yeah I sort of quit already too. Not sure who the translator is on this one but I wasn't enjoying it one bit.
  • Green: Best Russian translators: Pevear and Volokhonsky. According to me, anyway.
  • janeheiress: Emma is so hard to read! But I'm going to do it. And Pevear and Volokhonsky are fabulous, but I've only read Crime & Punishment.

The Year of Jane Austen, Part II

Okay, Jane Austen fans, March is here and so is the second installment of the reading schedule. So today I will begin reading Sense and Sensibility. So go to your private library, your public library, or your local book store and get you a copy because the reading starts now.

Ready?

Go!

For those interested, when I am done reading this book, I will watch the BBC (2008) mini-series Sense and Sensibility, not the version with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. I have never seen the BBC version, but I understand it is a bit different and quite good. Happy reading, everyone!

Already?

Why did I say I would do this?

It's good reading, Dubya. Plus, you can finally say you read all the Austen books by the end of this year. It is a worthy accomplishment. Stick with me, buddy. Doing this alone would be no fun.

I'm not going to read S&S, because I did just a year and a half ago. So I posted a chunk of my old writeup on the book club site: http://drama.abinadi.net/blog/entry/5

In short, it is definitely not Austen's best novel, but I still kind of love it.

It's a great idea to read these in order of writing, el Seco, because you can see how she progressed with time and experience.

I read S&S about a year ago as well. I love it.

The first time I read it, I didn't love it; I thought it was incredibly boring--as opposed to the Emma Thompson movie, which is probably the best movie ever made. The newer miniseries is good, and I like it a lot, but it's not the best movie ever made.
